Bogue
Chitto River Canoe Trip
Franklinton
to Enon, LA
Wayne’s
World Canoeing and Tubing
October
19-20, 2002
All
Scouts must have passed the BSA “Swimmers” test to be able to canoe without
an adult. A scout is required to
canoe with a parent if they have not passed the BSA Swim test.
Canoe
camping like backpacking requires more planning than “fluff” camping.
Take too little and you can be miserable.
Take too much or pack it wrong and you can be just as miserable.
Review the Canoe Camping Checklist (attached) and pack accordingly.
Definitely bring an effective mosquito repellant.
Canoeing/ tent partners, meal arrangements and equipment needed are to be
handled by the individual patrols and should be in place prior
to leaving on the trip. The cost of canoes for the overnight trip is
$35/canoe.
Dry
gear is good! Wet gear is bad! Canoes
take on water through paddling, rest stops and having fun. You definitely will
need to pack your bedroll and a change of clothing in something that will keep
it dry in the event the canoe turns over (trash compactor bags work well if
sealed properly). . Bring water or old tennis shoes to wear.
Also you will need to secure all the gear in the canoe so that it won’t
be lost in the event of a tipover. A twenty-foot length of yellow poly rope
should be brought along for this purpose. Check out the weather forecast the day
before to see if you will need additional clothing items.
Remember that whatever you take must fit in your canoe and must be
transported by you and your canoeing partner.
We
will go to Wayne’s World, our canoe outfitter, (985) 795-2204, located 3.5
miles southeast of Enon (about 35 miles from Mandeville) on the river.
We will be transported from there to Franklinton where we will enter the
Bogue Chitto River and canoe back to Wayne’s World which is approximately 15
miles (approximately 9 paddling hours).
We will camp on a sandbar Saturday night and finish the trip Sunday
morning.
We will meet at St. Timothy’s parking lot Saturday at 8:30 AM and leave for Bogue Chitto by 9:00 AM. As always we travel in Class A uniform. Directions to Bogue Chitto Canoe and Rental are as follows:
Take
Hwy 190 to Covington
Take
Hwy 21 to Sun
Turn
left onto Hwy 16 and go 9 miles towards Enon.
Turn
left at the Wayne’s World sign and follow the signs to their camp.
We will change into canoeing clothes leaving the uniforms in the vehicles for the trip home. The outfitter will take the canoes and us to Franklinton where we will enter the Bogue Chitto River. We should be in the water about 10:30 AM. The outfitter has indicated there is plenty of water in the river, which should allow us to canoe at a leisurely pace with lots of time for instruction and frequent rest stops. We will set up camp on a sand bar where we should be able to find enough wood for a campfire. There could be a few mosquitoes at dusk so come prepared. We should be back at St. Timothy’s in the early afternoon on Sunday.
